Stamp duty in India

Stamp duty is a state-level tax on property registration. Rates vary 4%–10% by state. Many states offer a 1–2% discount for female owners to encourage women's home ownership. Registration charges are additionally 1%–4% (often capped).

Formula: Stamp duty = Property value × State rate. Total cost = Property value + Stamp duty + Registration. Stamp duty is paid via e-stamping (most states) or franking (older method).

Tax benefit: Stamp duty + registration paid in the year of purchase qualifies for ₹1.5L Section 80C deduction (Old regime).
